Electrochlorination is the process of applying an electrical current to salt water to produce dilute sodium hypochlorite (bleach) and hydrogen gas. The resultant sodium hypochlorite solution contains between 0.7%-1% chlorine. This low concentration is considered non-hazardous to humans yet still destroys viruses, bacteria, and other harmful microorganisms present in the water, making it safe to drink and preventing the spread of diseases.

NanoWater design and supply skid mounted Electrochlorination packages and equipment for the water and wastewater industry. We do it in the most cost-effective way while meeting the quality, reliability and safety standards

Electrochlorination is an electrolysis process where either: seawater or Brine solution (water +salt) is converted to sodium hypochlorite (Chlorine) solution for biofouling control as well as for disinfection, bleaching and deodorizing purposes.

Sea Water Electrolysis process

This overall chemical reaction can be expressed as follows:

Salt + Water + Energy = Sodium Hypochlorite + Hydrogen
NaCl + H2O + 2e = NaClO + H2

Salt is composed of sodium and Chloride , Seawater normally contains chlorine ion (Cl-) at a concentration of from 15,000 to 20,000ppm. By electrolysis of seawater, the following reactions occur:, When in solution and DC current is passed through titanium electrodes, the chloride will disassociate to form chlorine.

  •  Anodic reaction: 2NaCl (seawater, brine) => 2Na+ + Cl2 + 2e-
  • Cathodic reaction: 2H2O + 2e- => H2+ 2OH-
  • Bulk reaction: 2 NaOH + Cl2 => NaClO + NaCl +H2O
  • Overall reaction : NaCl + H2O => NaClO + H2

Biofouling is one of the main challenges in the upstream processes in power plant, petrochemical plant, desalination pre and post treatments ..etc
Biological fouling can accelerate the corrosion on the process equipment and reduce the overall life of the process equipment which can be all controlled by the effective design of our electrochorination package.

What is Sodium Hypochlorite

Sodium Hypochlorite “NaOCL “also known as “bleach “ ,“ Hypo” or “liquid chlorine “is a power oxidant that is used worldwide for the chlorination of water for

  1. Anti-Biofouling (To prevent sliming, mussel /Barnacle growth, etc )
  2. Disinfection (For drinking water, general ani-Bacterial purposes in process water, etc )
  3. Chemical Treatment (bleaching, removal of Iron , manganese , etc )

The electrochlorination systems designed by NanoWater are fully automated requiring minimal operator attention, designed and manufactured to comply with the client specifications, applications and globally recognized standards. Designed for variable productive capacity to meet seasonal and operational dosing requirements.

ELECTROLYZERS

Electrolytic cells are bipolar in design. The electrolyzers operate under constant seawater flow rate while the D.C. current is adjusted so that the generation of hypochlorite matches the water treatment demand.

PROCESS AUTOMATION

Control of the complete technological process with a central PLC control system. Visualization of the entire process and logging of all key parameters of alarms. Any parts of the process of the system could also be adjusted by PLC.
Pressure Gauges, Pressure Switches, Flow Meters, Temperature Controllers, Level Switches, Level Controllers, Hydrogen Detectors, etc., are provided in the system to monitor the operation of the chlorine production. Output from all the instruments is connected to a Control Panel to properly control and monitor the operation. These Control Panels are either Relay based or PLC-based. PLC-based systems have an interface with the plant DCS through SCADA. Every step of the whole system is detected and controlled by the smart PLC center, safety, reliability.
Using of solar energy in such plant will support the isolated systems off the grid such as the control , communications , wifi , signage and street lighting.

Ballast water treatment

Ship’s ballast tanks often carry aquatic organisms that can cause a significant problem to ecosystems and economies when transported globally from one body of water to another.

In fact, the invasion of non-native species via ballast water has been described by maritime and environmental authorities as “one of the greatest threats to the world”. International Maritime Organization (IMO) have approved the convention on the management of ballast water, which requires the ballast tant water in ship must be treated effectively
