Phans™

Phans™ pH Adjustment and Neutralization System

pH is the measure of free hydrogen activity in water and can be expressed as:

pH= -log[H+]

 pH is the measure of free acidity or free alkalinity of water. Measured on a scale of 0-14, solutions with a pH of less than 7.0 are acids while solutions with a pH of greater than 7.0 are bases , bases are used to neutralize acids, while acids are used to neutralize alkalis (the term caustic, alkaline, alkali, or base) ,the byproducts of pH Neutralization are salts (which may or may not be soluble) and water.

The objective of  any pH adjustment system is to adjust the pH of the process stream into the defined acceptable discharge range. In the case of an acid neutralization, caustic (NaOH) is added to the effluent stream to pH Neutralize the solution. This neutralization, or titration can be expressed as follows:

HCl + NaOH NaCl + H2O

In the example shown above hydrochloric acid (HCl) is neutralized with caustic (NaOH) and yields ordinary table salt (NaCl) and neutral water.

NanoWater has developed the Phans™  “pH Adjust Neutralization System” which  has the ability to add an acid or a caustic. This allows for precise pH control and application of the chemistry. Both tanks contain pH probes that are constantly sending the precise pH levels to our Control Panel. This panel will automatically adjust the dosing rates of the chemical metering pumps. Both tanks also include mixers, with 316SS shafts, that are also controlled by the Control Panel.

Phans™ can also provide a final monitoring station which can include a sampling port, pH recording, and out of compliance alarms. This final monitoring station will ensure all flows from your facility to the drain are within your discharge permitted range.

Phans™ SYSTEM CONFIGURATIONS

There are many configurations of pH adjustment systems depending on the application and the process expectations.   Different types of pH systems include:

  • Single Stage pH Adjustment. Flow thru system. Used for simple pH adjust applications with little buffering capacity.  Also used for basic pH adjustment where precise pH is not required such as simple pH adjust to meet discharge range (5-11 pH typically). These systems typically include tanks, mixers, sensors, dosing pumps and controls.
  • Two Stage pH Adjustment. Flow thru system. Used for more difficult pH adjustment where significant buffering capacity exists or where precise pH adjustment is needed to hit a specific pH target such as specific metal precipitation. Not all metals precipitate at the same pH. These systems typically include tanks, mixers, sensors, dosing pumps and controls.
  • Batch pH Adjustment. This system is similar to the flow thru system in overall design except that in this case, batches are held and pH adjusted as long as needed to reach the pH set point. Once that is achieved and maintained it will allow the batch to be discharged.  These systems typically include tanks, mixers, sensors, dosing pumps and controls.
  • Flow Thru – In Pipe or In Line. This type of system is used for basic and fairly easy pH adjustment applications where there is not a lot of buffering or precise pH control is needed. In this system, pH is measured in-pipe while flowing, pH adjustment reagent is injected into the pipe.  The pipe includes static mixing elements, sensor and chemical fittings, dosing pumps and controls package.
